Into the Forest: Ellen Page, Evan Rachel Wood on film’s female empowerment

Into the Forest focuses on two sisters — played by Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Wood — who must band together to survive after a massive, continent-wide power outage. And the fact that it’s two women navigating the fears and challenges in this new post-apocalyptic world is important to those on screen and behind the camera.
“I was very drawn to doing a story with two women as leads,” writer/director Patricia Rozema explains in an exclusive featurette for the film, which you can see above. “I mean, much of what happens could have happened to two brothers, for instance, rather than two sisters, but it’s just so rare that I felt like it should be done.”
Into the Forest is set in the near future and based on the 1996 novel of the same name by Jean Hegland. For Wood, the story of the two women navigating this dangerous, post-apocalyptic new world is an “empowering” one.
“Everything that they’ve ever taken for granted is suddenly taken away,” she explains. “These two sisters come together and survive in the most drastic conditions. It’s a very empowering story for women as well.
As Page adds, “There’s something so beautiful about this movie because they have to unite in a way that’s very, very powerful and necessary in order to figure out what to do and how to survive.”
Watch Page, Wood, Rozema, and costar Max Minghella discuss the film in the video above. Into the Forest is available now on DirecTV, and is opening in theaters July 29.
