20th Century Fox have reportedly registered the movie title Days of Future Past with the MPAA Title Registration Bureau, leading to speculation that the classic alternative timeline tale could be the plot and title for the X-Men: First Class sequel.
It was just one week ago that Fox set the July 18th, 2014 release date for the X-Men: First Class follow-up. Is too much of a coincidence for Fox to have registered that movie title with the MPPA on the same week that they announced the release date for the sequel? I honestly dont know, perhaps Fox were, ironically enough, planning ahead for the future but the thought of seeing X-Men: Days of Future Past on the big screen must have any comic geek giddy. What a prospect for a film!
The classic two-issue X-Men comic was published by Marvel in 1981 and was set in an alternative future where mutants had been incarcerated in internment camps. In an attempt to change history, Kitty Pryde of the future time transfers her mind to Kitty Pryde of the present and the contemporary X-Men form a plan to stop the future from happening. There are Sentinels in the story of course and an assassination of Senator Kelly by Magnetos Brotherhood and it is tough to see how the X-Men: First Class sequel could go in this direction but in a crazy way Id love to see it happen and in some ways this perhaps should have been the plot of the 2011 prequel to make sense of the continuity changes.
Perhaps Fox will decide this is how they can do an X-Men 4, by using characters such as Halle Berrys Storm, Ian McKellens Magneto, Ellen Pages Kitty Pryde and Hugh Jackmans Wolverine from the post-X-Men 3 storyline and then going back to team with the new blood from X-Men: First Class era and you could replace Senator Kellys assassination with that of JFK to alter history although this is starting to sound a lot like the problematic Kirk and Picard team-up in Star Trek: Generations and is definitely less smarter than JJ Abrams 2009 film Star Trek.
For now just consider this as a very loose possibility but an interesting one to consider.
Matthew Vaughn will direct X-Men: First Class 2 (or whatever it ends up being called) from a script he will co-write with his regular writing partner Jane Goldman. Shooting on the film will begin in January 2003 for a release July 18th, 2014 and all the major characters who survived the original film will return.
