Canada's fastest-rising star, Ellen Page, took home the first trophy of the night at the 2008 MTV Movie Awards last night, nabbing the golden popcorn for Best Female Performance for her breakout role in Juno.
Her fellow Canadians didn't fare as well at Hollywood's quirkiest award show, known for its raucous acceptance speeches and offbeat categories. Ms. Page's Juno co-star, Michael Cera, lost to I Am Legend star Will Smith for Best Male Performance, while Johnny Depp shut out Vancouver-born Seth Rogen in the Best Comedic Performance category.
Host Mike Myers kicked off the ceremony with a high-energy dance battle against Chris Brown before reuniting with Dana Carvey for a surprise revival of classic Saturday Night Live skit "Wayne's World."
Iron Man took home the golden popcorn in the show's newest category, Best Summer Movie So Far, while Tom Cruise presented Adam Sandler with the MTV Generation Award for "displaying significant cinematic achievement."
The show went off without a hitch, despite the fire that ravaged adjacent Universal Studio lots earlier in the day.
