» Keener, Page charged with 'Crime' roles
by Kit, Borys, published on May 17, 2006

Catherine Keener and Ellen Page will star in "An American Crime," a gritty drama being directed by Tommy O'Haver. First Look Studios' Henry Winterstern and Kevin Turen are producing, in addition to Killer Films' Christine Vachon, Katie Roumel and Jocelyn Hayes-Simpson.

The story, which O'Haver wrote with Irene Turner, tells the true story of Sylvia Likens, a 16-year-old girl who died in 1965 while under the care of a woman named Gertrude Baniszewski. She put Sylvia through an ordeal that included beatings in the guise of discipline, burnings with cigarettes and matches and scalding hot baths, among other tortures. Encouraging a "Lord of the Flies"-type cult, Baniszewski involved her own children and children from her Indianapolis neighborhood in the punishments.

Keener is playing Baniszewski, while Page plays Likens.

"As a kid growing up in Indianapolis, this was a case that was always a dark part of the town's history," O'Haver said. "I am deeply grateful that First Look and Killer Films share my passion to tell this story."

First Look is financing the movie, which will shoot next month in Los Angeles.

Pam Koffler is an executive producer, as is John Wells.

The project was brought to First Look by vp creative Dana Lambert and is the first project from Killer Films to go into production since the announcement of the company's Los Angeles office.

Keener, repped by Gersh, was nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar for her work in "Capote" as well as "Being John Malkovich." She appeared in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and can be seen in "Friends With Money."

Page, who is receiving acclaim for her performance in "Hard Candy," next appears as Kitty Pryde in "X-Men: The Last Stand." She is repped by WMA and Kish Iqbal at the Gary Goddard Agency.

WMA-repped O'Haver last directed the romantic fantasy "Ella Enchanted." He is attached to direct "Breakfast With Tiffany," a tome he is adapting with Turner for Hart Sharp Entertainment.
