"Inception" messes with your mind by Aimee LaPlant, published on July 20, 2010 - 08:48 AM Movie: “Inception” Rating: PG-13 Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, and Cillian Murphy Time: 148 minutes Where it’s playing: Showplace 8 and 12 Why did you see it? Honestly, I saw the movie not because it got rave reviews but mostly because Ellen Page is in it. I have been a fan of her since “Hard Candy” (2006). What were your expectations of the movie? I knew it was going to be a great movie because Ellen Page is in it. What’s it about? Cobb (DiCaprio) is a skilled dream extractor who steals secrets from peoples’ minds when they’re in the deepest state of sleep. He seeks redemption for something he did in the past, so he can go home to his children. Saito (Ken Watanabe) offers him a chance to redeem himself and wants Cobb to form a team and plant an idea into the head of Fischer (Murphy), a corporate figure who has influence over the world. So far, people have been able to steal ideas from others, but they haven’t been able to insert an idea into someone’s head. What was the best thing about the movie? It’s absolutely captivating. The literal layers of a person’s dream state is an extremely creative concept, so I thought the direction of the movie was great. At 2 1/2 hours, I thought “Inception” ran at a snappy pace and there wasn’t one boring moment. I just kept guessing throughout the movie, trying to figure out the various puzzles. It was very suspenseful, too. After I saw the movie, I took a nap and had a dream about the movie. I woke up and wondered if I was still in a dream state. So, if viewers got into the movie like I did, they’ll be in for a pretty big mind-ride. What was the worst? From “Memento” (2000) to “Inception” (2010), I think it’s safe to say that Christopher Nolan has an obsession with dead female characters – as if “entertainment” can’t have enough! So, if others have seen his other movies, they’ll know what they’re in for. This movie isn’t for everyone. I did see people walking out of the theater – including my mom. So, if viewers aren’t into science fiction, then this movie will fly over their heads. How did it compare to other movies like this? Besides Nolan’s other movies, there aren’t many movies like this, and I think that’s why this movie is getting a lot of praise. It’s not the absolute best movie I ever saw – it’s just different for a change, and I really enjoyed the mental challenge. Who makes the movie? The casting is excellent, but the movie is more plot than character-driven, so the actors’ characters were mostly caricatures. However, they did a great job – especially Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard. With what they were given, they really got into their characters and attached themselves to the audience. To you, what was the message of the movie? Oh, that’s one of the joys of this movie. I’m still trying to figure out what went on. But honestly, I think most of it was Christopher Nolan just showing off some brilliant idea he had – and another dead woman, unfortunately. Would you see it again? Yes, even though I’m disturbed by Nolan’s “dead women obsession.” I’d see it again to try to figure it out. I do think the movie is more about interpretation than one particular answer, however. Describe the movie in one word: Layered! Rating (out of four stars): Three and a quarter. Source: www.sj-r.com |
