Sony Pictures' reveals the official plot synopsis and the first teaser trailer for its »Flatliners« reboot

Bloody Disgusting has obtained the official plot synopsis for the upcoming yet-untitled »Flatliners« sequel that reads as follows:

"Five medical students, hoping to gain insight into the mystery of what lies beyond the confines of life, embark on a daring and dangerous experiment. By stopping their hearts for short periods of time, each triggers a near-death experience. As the investigation becomes more and more perilous, they are forced to confront the sins of their pasts, as well as contend with the paranormal consequences of trespassing to the other side."

Flatliners Sequel 2017

At the same time Sony Pictures unveiled the first teaser trailer for the horror reboot Monday night during CinemaCon's opening presentation in Las Vegas. Both ComicBook and International Business Times attended this event and summarized the screened footage on their websites:

"In a cafeteria, a young couple finds discusses meeting downstairs. Ellen Page wants this team to stop her heart so she can see what happens when she dies. They do so with electricity. They wait a minute before bringing her back. "This September." She says she saw pure energy. The guy did it to, and their other friend. People question what they saw. Page saw a young girl in a car that spooks her. They have "opened a door." Someone urges them to stop the experiment. People aren't waking up as easily anymore. They're seeing dead people. Quick cuts take over. The room explodes. A car flies off a bridge. Characters are terrified. Page is pulled down a hallway. The film is Flatliners."

"Ellen Page's character Courtney asks a boy if he wants to join her and have some fun. He agrees, only to learn she wants him and others to kill her for a science experiment. Why try to die? Page's character reveals she wants to learn what happens to the body after a near death experience. She asks them to stop her heart with a defibrillator just for a minute. When they're successful, Courtney and her medical students friends all try it out, but it isn't fun and games for long. After a few trips back from the almost afterlife Page's character and her pals, played by Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kersey Clemons to name a few, all start to get visits from the beyond. After showing Page and her friends suffer from otherworldly visions and visits from the undead, Courtney announces, “This is all my fault.” The trailer ends with her character getting dragged away by an unknown being."

The film is currently scheduled for release on September 29 and will probably premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Ellen Page reprises Juno in all-female live-read by Jason Reitman benefiting Planned Parenthood

While »Juno« is approaching its 10th anniversary, director Jason Reitman is re-staging his 2007 independent film as a one-night-only live-read to raise money and awareness for the women's health organization Planned Parenthood next month. Ellen Page will be reprising her role as the quirky pregnant teen and Jennifer Garner will be back as the hopeful, adoptive mother. The male parts originally played by Michael Cera, Jason Bateman and J.K. Simmons will be filled by actresses as well.

It is going to be the third event of this kind with an entirely female cast following the readings of "Glengarry Glen Ross" and "Stand by Me", which already had Page taking on Chris in March 2016. "Considering how much this (last US presidential) election has done against women and what Planned Parenthood has done for women I thought it would be cool to hear this script with an all-female voice," Reitman said.

Jason Reitman and Mr Mudd Present A Juno Live Read

In fact, it was the 2016 election that inspired him to bring his live script-reading back to life after putting it aside after five seasons in April last year. This will be the first show of many in a new Resistance-inspired lineup, touching on topics such as immigration and the fake news epidemic. "Like many other people, I felt like I wanted to do something. I wanted to find a way to contribute to the causes that have never felt more important," he told Entertainment Weekly. "It occurred to me that I have this show that could be used as a tool to not only raise money for causes that need the help, but could serve as an opportunity for a group like Planned Parenthood to connect with an audience who can be presented with new ideas, or even an action item." At the same time he believes the live-read will resolve one point of debate about Juno, which was embraced by some anti-abortion advocates because the main character chooses to give birth rather than terminate the pregnancy. "If there was any confusion about whether Juno was pro-choice or pro-life, this should settle that. Juno had a choice, and that was the most important part."

The event will take place at the Ace Theater in downtown Los Angeles on April 8 at 7:30 PM, and tickets can be found here. The organizers will also be selling original artwork from the opening titles and other signed memorabilia, with all the money going to Planned Parenthood. Screenwriter Diablo Cody is scheduled to be in attendance at the reading, but won't play a part in it.

Ellen Page and Alia Shawkat join crew mates from »Whip It« to help save the L.A. Derby Dolls

The L.A. Derby Dolls called on roller derby and movie fans to join forces this past Sunday for a special screening of »Whip It« at the Regent Theater in Downtown L.A., with all profits going toward the financially stricken, volunteer-based organization. Because of a fire that killed 36 people at a party inside a nonpermitted Oakland warehouse known as the Ghost Ship in December 2016, the city of Los Angeles stopped issuing temporary special event permits to venues such as the Derby Dolls's Dollosseum for two years. As a result, the league is facing costly fees to file for a variance from city zoning laws that would allow them to reopen their doors following the cancellation of three scheduled events so far this year with another event later this month being in jeopardy as well. A fundraising campaign on GoFundMe aiming to raise a total of $119,000 to cover a $27,300 City Filing & Design fee, $75,000 in expected renovation costs of the converted El Sereno warehouse, and monthly operating costs, has met one-third of its goal so far.

Ellen Page, actress Alia Shawkat and singer Landon Pigg joined KPCC radio host and Derby Dolls veteran Alex Cohen, known by her skate name "Axles of Evil", »Whip It« screenwriter Shauna Cross a.k.a. "Maggie Mayhem", and roller derby trainer Jennifer Barbee a.k.a. "Kasey Bomber", co-author of the book "Down and Derby" with Cohen, at this event and participated in a Q&A following the movie screening.

Shawkat, who credits Drew Barrymore's directorial debut for reinvigorating her love for acting, was 19 when she joined the film's cast and crew in Detroit. "It was such a strong group of women. Drew wasn't just at the head of it, she definitely set a tone: 'We're all in this together',” she said. "Because of »Whip It«, still to this day people will come up to me and say, 'That movie was so important to me'. A woman came up to me once in Texas and said, 'I was in an abusive relationship, and I started derbying and ended it — it changed my whole life. It gave me strength again.'"

She also took the opportunity to praise the roller derby community itself: "It's about their own sexuality, their own strength, their own sportsmanship, their own competitiveness. These women are so strong in many definitions of the word." -- just like Ellen Page's character Bliss Cavendar, a small-town Texas teen who reinvents herself as a banked track speedster dubbed "Babe Ruthless" and follows her own path.

Another great moment occurred on stage when Ellen and Landon recreated a scene from the movie and Bliss got her Stryker shirt back from Oliver after all these years. Thanks to all fans out there who captured this and shared their photos on the social media with us!

First look at Ellen Page in David Freyne's feature directorial debut »The Third Wave«

Bac Films has released the first image of Ellen Page in the post-apocalyptic horror tale »The Third Wave« via Screen Daily. The feature debut of Irish director David Freyne unfolds in the aftermath of a devastating virus which transformed the infected into zombie-like monsters and sees a young woman wake in a hospital bed. As the horrifying events that led to her being there are revealed, it becomes clear that the cure is just the beginning. Mankind is struggling to rebuild societies deeply divided between the uninfected and those who did succumb to the virus and are still haunted by their terrible violent acts. In the backdrop, the rise of a terrorist movement, fuelled by the deep divisions, threatens to plunge the region into chaos again.

The Third Wave - Stills

Ellen stars in the lead role, alongside Sam Keeley, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, Paula Malcolmson and Amy De Bhrún. While the film is currently still in post-production, a selection of scenes will be screened for potential buyers at the European Film Market during the 67th Berlinale International Film Festival in Germany next week.
