Ellen Page and her »SUPER« buddies on »Doug Loves Movies« / 5th anniversary of »Ellen Page Online«
on 04/30/2011
Doug Benson produced another »Doug Loves Movies« podcast in front of a live audience at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in Los Angeles and welcomed Ellen Page, Steve Agee, James Gunn, Sean Gunn and Michael Rooker last Tuesday. Although all five guests were involved in »SUPER«, they only spoke briefly about the movie, praising Ellen's amazing performance and mentioning the successful VOD release. Most of the time was spent playing the »Leonard Maltin Game«, a regular feature of the podcast, where Benson reads the cast of an unknown movie in reverse order (star of the movie comes last) from Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide and his guests have to guess the title after deciding how many names they need to do so.

You can listen to and download the entire podcast on douglovesmovies.com, iTunes or here on EPO.

For those who care, today marks the official 5th anniversary/birthday of EPO. I actually came up with the idea of making a website for Ellen a few weeks earlier, but the 30th April 2006 is the date on which the first version finally went online. It was a day in early March that changed my life. I watched the US trailer for »X-Men: The Last Stand« and there was this sequence in the Danger Room which I believe didn't make it into the final cut: A wall explodes and Kitty looks up into the camera while lying on the ground (at 1:47). And I was like "Oh my god. Who is this girl?" I remember I read about her in a movie magazine that featured 100 facts about the movie and one of them was "Canadian actress Ellen Page is going play Kitty Pryde and replaces Katie Stuart, who replaced Sumela Kay." But I never cared about Kitty until this moment. Probably because this character barely got screen time in the first two movies and therefore wasn't as interesting as others like Wolverine or Nightcrawler. I then started doing some research and only came across a few sites with mostly outdated information. Although I hadn't seen any of her movies at this point, I was immediately convinced this attractive actress deserved a decent online presence. Why? I don't know. Maybe looking at her flipped a switch in my brain. What happened afterwards is history. »Hard Candy« and »X-Men: The Last Stand« found a wide audience which significantly increased the number of foreign people visiting the site. It soon became clear that the German version wouldn't be sufficient in the long run. As a result, a completely translated version went online on the 10th December 2006. And oh my gosh, my English was so awful at that time. I ignored comma-placement rules most of the time and kept the sentences as simple as possible. Since there was no real proof reader, you can still read these masterpieces of writing to date. However, I believe people are able to get the essence of my postings and that's what really matters. In the following years, Ellen starred in an inconspicuous independent movie about an unexpected teen pregnancy, received a Best Actress nomination from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, did some other critically acclaimed film projects and "firmly established herself as one of the most talented young actresses in Hollywood." What was started as a website dedicated to a rather unknown actress from Halifax, Nova Scotia, has turned into the first port of call for every true fan who wants to stay up to date on one of his favourite A-listers. Today, EPO features 333 German and 273 English news postings, 825 video clips available via streaming and download, 3,866 English and 328 German articles in the press archive, two galleries with 25,508 images and 4,932 icons/wallpapers, the most comprehensive filmography around, an active fan forum as well as a unique fancorner with information on DVDs, CDs, books and much more.

I'm proud of what I've achieved in the past 5 years. EPO is not like any other fan site. It's different in a good way and far superior to anything else available on the net. It's not a simple Wordpress blog decorated with some candid postings and a biography taken from Wikipedia. It has a soul, a personal tone and offers everything a real fan needs. Lately, even other news and movie websites take a look at it to get the latest information or grab some material for their articles. Twitch re-posted a clip from James Gunn's superhero comedy, BeyondHollywood used some images taken from the gallery for its »SUPER« review and a NSFW site promoted the still of Ellen in her body tight superhero costume. At the same time, Backstage.com directly linked to EPO in its recent article on Ellen. So am I completely happy? Absolutely not! Mainly because not much has changed concerning the things mentioned in my posting in October 2010. There was a short period of time where people commented on articles and gave me some feedback. Now it mostly feels like I'm talking to myself while writing and publishing a news post. Despite the release of »SUPER«, only 13 different visitors have signed the guestbook in 2011 so far. Overall, the continuing lack of general support, and appreciation for the work I'm doing here every single day, from everyone who's reading this to the young woman this website is dedicated to, is anything but motivating in the long run. Wanna have a recent example? In April 2011, I asked people to watch out for articles and reviews on »SUPER« in their newspapers and make some photos and scans so they can be shared in the gallery for everyone to read. What have I got to this day? Three "Likes" on Facebook and no article at all. That's really, really great! I could easily go on with other grievances, but I think many have already been pointed out in the previously mentioned posting. Actually, I wouldn't expect anything if I'm running a fan site dedicated to an actress like Kristen Stewart, Miley Cyrus or Emma Watson and this is just one of many others. But it's safe to say that's not the case here. There is currently only one Ellen Page fan site which really deserves this description. So why is EPO still online? Because its webmaster isn't willing to give up that easy and still hopes some things can be changed in the upcoming months. Besides, he has put too much time and effort into the website to just leave it all behind from one day to the next. And to be honest, he wouldn't know what to do with all the stuff he bought and collected in the course of the past 5 years. This includes more than 130 DVDs of Ellen's movies and series from various countries, around 40 kilograms of magazines stored under his bed and some really hard to find movie memorabilia, promo stuff and other collectibles.

Let this be a further wake-up call for all of you. Please ask yourself what this website means to you, what the internet would be without it and what you can do to keep it alive and running for all of us to enjoy. As stated before, there are so many ways to show your gratitude, appreciation, and recognition for EPO and my work. You've found an article on Ellen in a magazine or paper which isn't available in the gallery yet? Scan it or take a good photo of it. I will gladly upload your contribution and give full credit to you. You've seen Ellen at a film festival or movie premiere and taken some photos or even a video you now want to share with her fans? Please send them! You would like to contribute something by buying a current issue of a magazine which has an article on Ellen for me? That's great, because since I live in Germany it's always expensive and time-consuming to get a copy. You're a TV junkie who knows the television program inside out or you're involved in organizing movie screenings or film festivals? Maybe you can help to keep the calendar up to date. Again, this won't work in the long run without the input, feedback, help and support of the visitors, fans and people who apparently care about this project. Please help keep EPO going!
