It’s been ten months since the announcement that Ellen Page is attached to star in an indie adaptation of Jean Hegland's
acclaimed post-apocalyptic novel »Into the Forest«
. Yesterday, a new press release was issued confirming actress Evan Rachel Wood
(»Across the Universe«
, »Pretty Persuasion«
) has joined the cast and will play the sister to Page’s character.
The story centers on Nell and Eva, two teens growing up in a remote Northern California forest, schooled at home and taught to follow their whims and wishes. Their lives are changed forever following the deaths of their parents and the degradation of the world around them, which falls victim to war, terrorism, erratic weather and an upended economy. Once the power goes out and fossil fuels are used up, the girls are forced to come to grips with the hardships of a life they were never taught how to live.
Though it sounds as if Jean Hegland
could have written her novel just a few months ago, it was actually published back in 1996.
The fact that the narrative is still eerily relatable toward our current world, economy and environment, means the film has contemporary relevance and star power going for it. Patricia Rozema
, »Grey Gardens«
) will be directing from her own adapted screenplay. At the same time, Ellen is set to make her debut as a producer alongside Kelly Bush Novak
and Sriram Das
. Haroon ‘Boon’ Saleem
will executive produce, while Kristina Sorensen
joins the crew as an associate producer.
It is not yet known which actress is playing which role. But with Eva being a ballet dancer, I expect Ellen to portray the younger sister Nell, who is a true bookworm and also the narrator of the story. Since the novel doesn't contain many characters, the casting process shouldn't take too long and filming will probably start in the next few months.
