A small victory: Halifax's city council has put the use of biosolids on hold / »Inception« Blu-ray screen captures
Ellen Page and the citizens of Halifax have gained a small, but important victory in the continuing fight against the use of biosolids on municipal land. The Canadian Press reported yesterday that the ongoing controversy concerning the spreading of treated human waste has had a polarizing effect on city council. As a consequence of this, local councillors have put the use of biosolids on hold until the results of an external assessment are in hand.

However, there are still a lot of people who take a different point of view and don't like this resolution. Many of them neither share Ellen's compassion for the environment and human health nor her concerns. They also keep questioning her qualifications to speak publicly about biosolids or simply advise her to stick to acting. At the same time, Rob Sampson, president of N-Viro, the company taking the sludge from the city's sewage treatment plants and processing it into usable compost, is quoted as saying, "We need to make decisions based on science and not hysteria. You've got to consider that this isn't coming right out of the toilet and into the field. It's being treated at the sewage plant and our plant."

But even if Ellen and all the other Haligonians who joined her are completely wrong and there is nothing dangerous about using biosolids as fertilizer, it still smells terrible and makes some people sick. I'm sure residents living in the affected neighborhoods won't deny this fact. We can only hope the assessment is made by an approved, independent and unbiased third party, and the Haligonians find a common denominator in order to work out a solution that everyone can live with!
