»Kick Coal and Oil Out of LA Rally« / Cisco »ŪMI« campaign / »Inception« on DVD/Blu-ray / Second »SUPER« clip
Since I believe Ellen cares more about working on climate change issues than her acting at the moment, let's start with the most important thing first. From energy audits in Singapore to biochar production in China, reforestation in Rwanda to beach clean up in Borneo, people around the world rolled up their sleeves at 7347 events in 188 countries on October 10 to celebrate climate solutions, demand bold climate policies from governments and participate in the »Global Work Party«. The goal of this global event was not to solve all climate issues at once, but to send a pointed political message: "We're getting to work - so should you." However, from the very beginning the organizers over at 350.org knew they couldn’t build the movement in just one day, but the »Global Work Party« did make the foundation for their fight much larger and much stronger. With international media outlets like the BBC, CNN and AFP, thousands of blogs and hundreds of local and national newspapers reporting about the events and the day of the action, they made sure that political leaders knew that people expect them to take bold action on climate change.

One of the biggest events in Los Angeles was a rally at City Hall called »Kick Coal and Oil Out of LA« co-hosted by Greenpeace, Green LA and the Sierra Club as a part of the club’s own ongoing »Beyond Coal« campaign and the city-wide »CicLAvia« project. Hundreds of community members from all parts of the city came together to break LA’s reliance on coal and oil and oppose companies that are damaging the environment to produce energy and also endangering human health.

At present, nearly 40% of Los Angeles’ electric power comes from coal-burning plants in Arizona and Utah, which could and should be from clean, renewable power sources such as from solar or wind. Additionally, the city has one of the largest collections of oil refineries in the United States, dumping loads of pollution into the air and harming local residents while making climate change worse. Given these facts, the goal of the rally was to raise awareness of the need for an energy future that embraces LA’s enormous potential for renewable power. To emphasise their demand, more than 7,000 Angelenos have also signed a petition to the City Council, asking the City’s elected leaders to ensure the Department of Water and Power approves a plan that will end the use of dirty and dangerous coal-fired power in Los Angeles by 2020.

Ellen attended this event wearing a »Democracy Now!« T-shirt and made a brief speech in front of the other environmentalists. Furthermore, she showed support for the »Hell No on Prop 23« protest march, which happened at the same time. »California Proposition 23« (also known as »Dirty Energy Prop«) would suspend the implementation of Air Pollution Control Laws (AB 32), until the local unemployment rate drops to 5.5% or below for four consecutive quarters. As the current rate is 12.4%, this wording is seen by opponents as a trick to delay the environmental regulations indefinitely. AB 32, the Global Warming Act of 2006, requires that greenhouse gas emission levels in the state be cut to 1990 levels by 2020 through a comprehensive greenhouse-gas-reduction program that includes increased renewable energy and cleaner fuel requirements, and mandatory emission reporting and fee requirements for major polluters such as power plants and oil refineries.

What's next? One single day isn't enough to stop global warming since our environment isn't going to fix itself on its own. Climate change is a present problem, not a future threat, but the political conditions all over the world are not where they need to be to fix it. Now it's time to change that. We need our leaders to get to work, we need to pursue new strategies and include more people. Visit 350.org for information on what actions you can take. Your help and support is more important than ever in this changing world! I'm sure Ellen would love if her fans join the movement and show the same passion for being ecologically responsible and making a difference in the future of our planet!

It looks like the »Human Network« commercials with a certain Canadian actress were a success and must have met expectations. Earlier this month, Cisco Systems announced a second national advertising campaign featuring Ellen and her friends using the new TelePresence video conferencing technology called »ŪMI« in their everyday lives.

As video calling is increasingly becoming more important to our population, wouldn’t it be great to have an easy-to-use video experience that fits into your home, automatically adjusts to lighting conditions and various room sizes plus provides the best video and audio quality possible? How about an experience that is so clear and lifelike that you feel like you are in the same room as your loved ones?

»ŪMI« (pronounced as ‘you-me’) is a first-of-its-kind consumer product which allows people to connect and start using their existing HD television and broadband internet connection for videoconferencing. The hardware consists of 3 parts: an HD camera unit, a set-top box and an infrared remote. The remote control provides easy access to an on-screen user interface through which users can make ūmi calls, access video messages, record their own videos, manage contacts and customize their profile and settings. Cisco promotes the device as the ultimate way to capture the simple joys of being together with our distant friends and loved ones, whether they are around the corner or across the country. The American-based multinational corporation envisions a future where technologies like this will play a role in connecting businesses to the home, enabling the delivery of new services, ranging from education, to health care, to financial services.

However, everything comes at a price. »ŪMI« itself is expected to cost around $599 and requires a monthly subscription fee of $25 for unlimited ūmi calls, video messaging and video storage. It's up to everyone to decide if it's worth it. The spots with Ellen are scheduled to air sometime this fall, by the way.

»Inception« won the »Hollywood Movie Award« at the 14th annual Hollywood Awards Gala ceremony in Beverly Hills last Monday. It was chosen by the public through the Yahoo Movies website on which more than 260,000 votes were cast. Just one week earlier, Christopher Nolan's big-screen blockbuster picked up six prizes including the top honor, »The Ultimate Scream«, at Spike TV's Scream Awards 2010 in Las Vegas. The other awards were »Best Science Fiction Actor« for Leonardo DiCaprio, »Best Supporting Actor« for Joseph Gordon-Levitt, »Breakout Performance« for Tom Hardy, »Fight Scene of the Year« and »Best Science Fiction Movie«. Ellen was nominated as »Best Science Fiction Actress«, but lost to Scarlett Johansson (»Iron Man 2«).

Meanwhile, Warner Home Video has announced that the movie is coming to Blu-ray and DVD in early December. The exact release dates are as follows: Germany/France: December 3; United Kingdom: December 6; North America/Japan: December 7, Australia: December 8. While details on the European release of a »Limited Edition Briefcase Set« (including a Dream Machine-like mini briefcase, a spinning top, the PASIV device manual, the two prologue comics »The Cobol Job« and »The Big Under«, Triple Play Edition (Blu-ray, DVD and a Digital Copy), and a photo gallery) came out just over a month ago, it is still not known if that version will be available in the United States. But the American people can at least get their hands on a DVD and Blu-ray plus Digital Copy. In addition, Amazon Germany and Amazon Japan are exclusively offering a steelbook edition.

Film Synopsis

Cobb is a skilled thief and coveted player when it comes to extraction: the stealing of valuable secrets from deep within the mind during a subject’s dream state. His skill, though, has turned him into an international fugitive and he is now being offered a chance at redemption. One last job. One last job to give him his life back. But only if he can pull off the impossible – inception — not stealing an idea but planting one. If Cobb and his team succeed, it will be the perfect crime. However, no amount of meticulous planning can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming.

Director James Gunn visited the Sitges Film Festival for 3 days where he introduced »SUPER« to the Spanish people then he headed to the previously mentioned Scream Awards 2010 to present another clip featuring Rainn Wilson aka »The Crimson Bolt« from his superhero comedy. He showed a slightly shortened version of the footage that was debuted at the San Diego Comic Con on July 13, 2010. If you have not seen the clip already, you can watch it below. Please note that the scene is NSFW and includes foul language and graphic violence, which might also be the reason why viewers respond to it in different ways. The reactions go from "hahaha that was epic" and "fucking amazeballs, I want to do that to people every day!" to "Um... was that supposed to be funny?" and "I'm all for douchebags getting theirs but this seems lame and unnecessary". These comments, in turn, totally reflect James Gunn's early statement in which he clearly points out »SUPER« is "not a movie for everyone".
