Ellen in a movie by Michel Gondry? / »Peacock« trailer / »2012: Time for Change« premiere / »Vanishing of the Bees«

Sorry I didn't update the website in the past 17 days, but I was totally busy with learning for my Cisco CCNA Certification (maybe I should visit Lunenburg and check out the Human Network before doing the final exam ;-)) and a lot of other things. Anyway, here are the latest Ellen Page news for you.

Just a few minutes ago MTV reported director Michel Gondry is teaming up with Daniel Clowes to create a time-travel drama and already has a Canadian actress in mind for the leading role. »Ellen Page is supposed to be the main character,« Gondry said. »She'd play Nancy, a young woman who participates in the discovery and changes the world.« Considering Ellen admires his work and »Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind« is one of her favorites, I won't be suprised if she signs for the film.

[ Update - 03/16/2010: The Playlist decided to do some digging on this story and their sources intimately involved with the filmmaker have confirmed that the project Ellen Page is attached to is indeed »Return Of The Ice Kids«. That project, about a group of teenagers who develop a form of water that makes you hear music when you drink it, has been kicking around for a while (see Turning Water Into Music? Michel Gondry's Next Film To Be The »Ice Kings«) and isn't expected to go in front of cameras anytime soon. Gondry hopes to get to »The We & The I« next after he wraps up work on »The Green Hornet«. ]

Last weekend, Blockbuster has released the official trailer of »Peacock«, which is going straight to DVD on April 20th. Although it raises more questions than it answers, I especially like the very last scene where John Skillpa apparently gets a call from his alter ego Emma. For those of you who are still not familiar with the plot; Cillian Murphy is playing a person with a multiple personality who is known as John Skillpa, but becomes Emma while staying at home. When a train crashes into his backyard, this secret is revealed and a young mother named Maggie seems to appear from nowhere. She holds the key to Skillpa's past and sparks a battle between the personalities. No matter how good or bad the movie will be, it's a real pleasure to see Ellen alongside Susan Sarandon, Bill Pullman, Josh Lucas and Murphy. Sci-Fi fans may also recognize Graham Beckel who starred as Colonel Jack Fisk, Executive Officer (XO) of the Battlestar Pegasus, in Ronald D. Moore's Battlestar Galactica remake.

According to its Facebook page, Ellen will be narrating the US version of »Vanishing of the Bees« because she loves bees, realizes the urgency to save them and is into permaculture. At the same time, she actually came to the project via a bee - Ellen was on set of »Inception« with co-star Leonardo DiCaprio when a clapper killed a bee. She was irate and Leo suggested she meet a friend who was saving bees out of his pool the other week. That friend was in turn a friend of the producers and showed her the film, whereupon she expressed interest. What looks like a sequel to Jerry Seinfeld's »Bee Movie« without CGI effects at first sight, is a serious documentary that takes a piercing look at the economic, political and spiritual implications of the world wide disappearance of the honeybee, a keystone species vital to sustaining our ecosystem. You can learn more about it by reading the official synopsis or watching the 7 minutes long trailer below or visiting the official website vanishingbees.com.

Honeybees have been mysteriously disappearing across the planet, literally vanishing from their hives.

Known as Colony Collapse Disorder, this phenomenon has brought beekeepers to crisis in an industry responsible for producing apples, broccoli, watermelon, onions, cherries and a hundred other fruits and vegetables. Commercial honeybee operations pollinate crops that make up one out of every three bites of food on our tables.

Vanishing of the Bees follows commercial beekeepers David Hackenberg and Dave Mendes as they strive to keep their bees healthy and fulfill pollination contracts across the U.S. The film explores the struggles they face as the two friends plead their case on Capital Hill and travel across the Pacific Ocean in the quest to protect their honeybees.

Filming across the US, in Europe, Australia and Asia, this documentary examines the alarming disappearance of honeybees and the greater meaning it holds about the relationship between mankind and mother earth. As scientists puzzle over the cause, organic beekeepers indicate alternative reasons for this tragic loss. Conflicting opinions abound and after years of research, a definitive answer has not been found to this harrowing mystery.

In this context, you should also have a look at the recently published »Girls Gone Green« by Lynn Hirshfield in which Ellen gives pointers on hosting a planting party and goes green to make a difference. (Click on the previews to see larger versions)

By the way, did you know that EPO is hosted climate neutral by Domainfactory, one of the most successful web hosting companies in Germany and Austria? Climate neutral means that a service or product doesn't have a negative impact on the climate and industrial greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced significantly, through a combination of low-impact (low-emission) organic agriculture and carbon-neutral manufacturing, achieved by substituting energy from fossil fuel-powered generating stations with clean, renewable »green« energy from wind turbines and solar power (check df.eu for further details).

Finally, a short update on »Inception«. Although Leonardo DiCaprio stayed quiet in regards to the plot, he told Movies.ie in a recent interview that »it's about two hours long«. And in an upcoming issue of Empire Magazine, director Christopher Nolan mentions he was only 16 when he came up with the concept for the movie and is quoted with the following words: »Basically the film deals with levels of reality, and perceptions of reality which is something I'm very interested in. Its an action film set in a contemporary world, but with a slight science-fiction bent to it. Cobb [Leonardo DiCaprio's character], who is the center of things and expert in a particular technology that the film revolves around, has put this team around him [Page, Hardy, Levitt]. It's very much an ensemble film structured somewhat as a heist movie. It's an action adventure that spans the globe.«
