On the evening of the »Inception« world premiere in London, Ellen didn't have much time to enjoy the special event and the closing after party. Directly after the screening she went, accompanied by her publicist Kelly Bush, to Studio TC4 in the BBC Television Centre, where »Friday Night with Jonathan Ross« is made. While waiting for her first appearance in a British talk show, she shared the green room with British comedian Jimmy Carr, the eccentric magicians Penn & Teller and music legend Sir Tom Jones. During the conversation with host Jonathan Ross, the Canadian actress revealed that she has left the haunted former brothel and moved to a smaller apartment in Halifax. Speaking about »Inception« she mentioned her fellow co-star Tom Hardy got papped teaching her to fight on the set, which is actually funny because "it looked like he was beating up a little girl." She also briefly talked about »Mouth to Mouth« which was partially filmed in London. If you missed it, watch the video below!

The next morning the whole »Inception« team headed up to Paris in order to attend another press conference held at the Hôtel Le Bristol. Thanks to my French friends Florian Lapôtre over at Filmgeek.fr and Mathieu Crucq, who runs cineshow.fr, we have some great photos and a full length video of this event. The clue is the clip has two channels of audio. On the left you can listen to the cast, Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas and the moderator and on the right to the French translation of their answers. I left the translator audio track because Marion Cotillard preferred to speak in her native language, which means you get an English translation on the right speaker when she talks. If you don't want to hear both tracks at the same time, I suggest to use the audio controls of your media player or operating systems to switch between the channels. Please keep in mind that there are a few spoilers because some press representatives had already seen the movie.

On the following day they all showed up at Gaumont Champs Elysees for the Paris premiere of their movie. Unfortunately, most of the photographers only had eyes for Leonardo DiCaprio and the local beauty, so there aren't many photos of Ellen.

Finally, here are some excerpts from the latest »Inception« reviews:
”Inception is outstanding in almost every way conceivable, from Hans Zimmer's brutally dramatic and modern score to Wally Pfister's magnificent cinematography, which makes the most of the astonishing and hugely varied locations that the film travels to. No-one makes a false step amongst the ensemble cast, all of whom deliver fantastic work, with Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy proving particularly impressive. Ultimately, however, this is Nolan's film, having written and directed it with apparently limitless creative freedom. The world can finally have unfiltered access to his vision, and it's like nothing we've ever seen. Although it owes huge debts to a vast number of different films and works of art, and though it even embraces genre to some extent - it is, in many ways, a heist film, though by no means a conventional one - the greatest and most striking virtue of Inception is its fierce originality. It functions at once as a superior thriller and a self-referential tribute to the infinite possibilities that face a true artist. Against all odds, and in a summer of well over twenty remakes and sequels, Christopher Nolan has delivered a phenomenal action film of extraordinary intelligence. There aren't enough superlatives in the world.”
Ben Kirby, Cherwell, cherwell.org
| | ”Nolan has used his craft, moreover his craftspeople, to play his audience. Not in a clever-clever way, but in a Hitchcock way, i.e. ‘play’ is the optimum word. Inception is very silly movie that deliberately takes itself very seriously. Don’t fight; you will only get aggravated that it ‘doesn’t make sense’. Roll with the journey and trust that it will take you where you want to go.”
Chris Laverty, Clothes on Film, clothesonfilm.com | |
”In a summer bogged down once more in sequels and adaptations, The Dark Knight helmer Christopher Nolan has delivered a film of staggering originality, that packs more intellect into its two and a half hour running time than most filmmakers manage in a career. Full of ideas - every one of them wholly realised - Inception is also executed with skill, precision and perpetual innovativeness. The fact that a film this smart has been made on this high of scale is a testament not just to its makers, but to studio Warner Bros. who deserve credit for bankrolling something so inherently complex, it may go over the head of some less receptive viewers.” … “Without a doubt Inception will take multiple viewings to fully digest. It is a film that respects its audience completely and asks them to play along and stick with it, as it continually digs deeper, until its emotional climax. A remarkable and stunning piece of work.”

Mike Sheridan, Entertainment.ie Ireland, entertainment.ie | | ”Beware the critic who claims the ability to analyze Inception authoritatively after one viewing. As engrossing and logic-resistant as the state of dreaming it seeks to replicate, Christopher Nolan's audacious new creation demands further study to fully absorb the multiple, simultaneous stories Nolan finagles into one narrative experience. First time around, the movie — part sci-fi fantasy, part gun-toting heist pic, part mindfreak, all filmmaker brio — is dazzling and buzzy. It's a rolling explosion of images as hypnotizing and sharply angled as any in a drawing by M.C. Escher or a state-of-the-biz videogame; the backwards splicing of Nolan's own Memento looks rudimentary by comparison. Only repeated exposure can clarify for each spectator not only what's going on, but also whether the emotional payoff deepens enough to warrant the arbitrary complexity of the game.”

Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, ew.com | | ”There is not much more that one can ask from a movie – but Inception also delivers thoroughly believable performances in its many (purposefully) less than believable scenarios, and matches the gymnastics through which it puts the mind with a kaleidoscope of awe-inspiringly idiosyncratic imagery, as though all the tropes of a conventional thriller were being both defamiliarised and trumped before our eyes. You will no doubt need to see Inception more than once to appreciate every nuance of Nolan's carefully balanced ambiguities – but, more importantly, you will also want to. This is a film that people will be watching, rewatching and cherishing for years to come, in pursuit of answers that only they can in fact provide, as they choose to connect their own brains to Cobb's dreams. Worming its way into our consciousness with more ideas than a year's worth of blockbusters, Inception is a triumph of cerebral cinema.”

Anton Bitel, Eye for Film, eyeforfilm.co.uk | | ”Inception is a rare thing: a summer blockbuster filled with intelligence and craft, which in the current reality of remakes and sequels, feels like a dream itself.”
Ambrose Heron, FILMdetail, filmdetail.com | | ”Yet for all its cleverness and spectacle, the story is firmly grounded in a recognised reality. Cobb’s love for his wife and family elevates Inception from mere blockbuster fare to a moving, emotive level. The ensemble cast put in measured, occasionally masterly, performances. And as DiCaprio reinstates his position as one of Hollywood’s finest, charismatic Brit Tom Hardy confirms his talent and his buzz-building performance in Bronson last year – his star is surely set to rise higher still. ”

 | ”Like a giant cinematic jigsaw puzzle, Inception will keep you guessing right until the very end as it carries you through to the unbelievably tense climax. If ideas are the future of tomorrow, Inception certainly thinks bigger and better than the rest. ”

Ann Lee, Metro UK, metro.co.uk | | ”Wow! This stunning all-action sci-fi thriller is a truly brilliant bit of cinema, and really does deliver in terms of mind-bending effects and spectacular action moments." ... "A truly stunning piece of sci-fi action... a film that will leave you wanting more”
Mark Adams, Mirror UK, mirror.co.uk | | ”More than anything, though, Inception is a full-on rollercoaster ride packed with jaw-dropping stunts and eye-popping effects, set inside a logic-defying alt-universe where anything can and does happen." ... "A classy actioner that's full of ideas, if a little lacking in warmth.”

Neil Smith, MSN Movies UK, movies.uk.msn.com | | ”There is no denying this is a spectacular film, with amazing special effects and great performances from the cast. In a summer filled with vacuous popcorn movies, this is a sci-fi flick that is both exciting and intelligent. If anything that is one of the film's faults – it is a bit too cerebral, and for a movie about dreams, too logical. Nolan is, without doubt, a great filmmaker of almost technical perfection, but his films, and this one in particular, are a little dry, controlled and contrived, with a lack of a real emotional core. Even the love story between Cobb and his wife (Marion Cotillard) doesn't feel real: or maybe that too is part of the dream. In comparison with other movies showing at the same time, INCEPTION has amazing action set-pieces, but they are not a patch on the shameless, balls-out action of PREDATORS; the speculative science isn't quite as believable as that in SPLICE, which has the added advantage of not taking itself too seriously either; and it doesn't have the fantasy or emotional impact of TOY STORY 3." ... "Would I recommend it? Absolutely, especially in IMAX. Did it leave me excited and enthused in the way, say, KICK ASS did? Not at all, but it didn't make me feel sleepy either. And the ending: enigmatic or a cop out? See it and decide for yourself.”
Chris, SCI-FI-LONDON, sci-fi-london.com | | ”Some people may compare “Inception” to “The Matrix” for its similar mind bending conventions only this time, the alternate reality is the world of dreams. And much like the Keanu Reeves film, I want to see “Inception” again. If you’re thinking that “Inception” is too cerebral for your taste, think again. The film also offers enough humor and incredible action scenes to balance the film’s mood and atmosphere. In this summer of sequels, prequels, and remakes, it’s great to see a movie that is truly original. I now officially worship at the altar of Nolan, the master of mind (I cannot say the last word that begins with the letter f and ends with a k).”
