| As Ellen is environmentally friendly and has a relationship with the town vis CISCO, how would see feel about this? The beautiful Town of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia is a treasured UNESCO Heritage site where the visitor is be treated to magnificent historic homes, great shops, award-winning restaurants and a reprieve from the trappings of the big city. We are home to the Bluenose II as well as other tall ships and have a waterfront that used to grace the $100 bill. It possesses an allure that modern money just can’t buy. To walk these colourful streets is like stepping back in time to celebrate an immensely rich heritage. There are no neon lights, no unsightly strip malls and no lack of charm. However, if town council has its way at a March 30th public meeting, all that could change. Town council, in a baffling turn of events is about to amend two bylaws to pave the way for a fast food drive-through, not on the outskirts where it would be tolerable but right at the gateway to this amazing Town. To aggravate this ill-conceived notion, the site, currently an old Esso, is flanked by a Day Care on one side and a Fire Station on the other. The proponents have been praising the developer’s building design as if it was the 7th wonder of the world, while ignoring the environmental implications for vehicles idling near a day care, and the safety concerns of emergency vehicles running the gauntlet of fast-food junkies potentially blocking lanes. The proponents attempt to raise fears – ‘nobody will want the site due to environment concerns, so it must go ahead’ yet the developer has commissioned an environmental study that apparently gives the property a clean bill of health. The coin is flipped depending on which argument they need in the moment. The town administrators have been asked to put the breaks on to consider growing opposition but there are egos at stake. Despite the fact that significant numbers of long term residents are against the development, the perception by some councilors is that “newcomers” are trying to tell them what to do. The development is such a vast departure from what Lunenburg stands for, it may threaten the UNESCO designation that attracts thousands of visitors here annually. The opponents could be wrong about that but isn’t the risk high enough to warrant some soul searching about what we could be loosing? |
| Final release of Ellen's public service announcements for »Food, Inc.« / New movie stills from »Peacock« and »Whip It« from 02/26/2010 |
| Since my report on the PSAs that Ellen made in order to support a tougher Childhood Nutrition Act and the award winning movie »Food, Inc.« in June 2009, not much has happened on this front. In fact, it took till yesterday for TakePart, LLC to finally put them online. In the three short clips after the jump, you can watch Ellen answering your questions on eating healthy (on the go) and about how your food choices effects the environment. After taking part in the US Campaign for Burma, designing and signing an item for the Annual Celebrity Lunchbox Auction, giving a pep talk to leafleteers ready to protest »Proposition 8« and participating in the upcoming »2012: Time for Change« documentary, this is the fifth time the Canadian actress takes a firm stand and uses her celebrity status to spread the word about issues she cares about. Especially when it comes to change our food system her appeal should be heard because there is something everyone can do. Stop drinking sodas and other sweetened beverages, eat at home instead of eating out, go without meat one day a week (Meatless Mondays), buy organic or sustainable food with little or no pesticides or enjoy some fresh fruits and vegetables instead of pizza, burgers and all those snacks are only a few of many examples. Make sure to visit www.takepart.com/foodinc for further information and start to make a difference today!

Although we already got more than 60 movie stills from »Whip It«, Fox Searchlight still had some unreleased images up their sleeve for the release in foreign countries like Slovenia, Russia or the Czech Republic. Of course, all of them, along with some new pics from »Peacock«, have been added to the gallery and can be seen here. In this regard, I'd like to thank the committee of the Dubai International Film Festival for the kind support! » Peacock movie stills « ![]()
